This is actually the same bug as this one I've reported earlier: Bug #27909. I didn't know at the time, but now I've realized that the black screen on my 22" also happens when the connection is discovered as "HDMI-1". Killing x and removing cable doesn't change this, but a real reboot sometimes changes it to "TMDS-1", and then everything works.
