I have the same problem, vim seems to be starting in vi-compatible mode
and that causes it.

After reading a bit, it looks like on dapper "set nocompatible" is in
the /etc/vim/vimrc file. However on edgy, this line was moved to
/usr/share/vim/vim70/debian.vim which is supposed to be included from
/etc/vim/vimrc, but this seems to be not working for some reason.
