I rebooted and some of the devices on the laptop did not work as normal,
such as the Netgear WG511T wireless card. I'm supposing it was due to
the depmod failure.

I removed all 2.6.24-21 packages, which included the generic and rt
kernel meta packages as dependencies, and rebooted into a previous
kernel (2.6.24-19). I then re-installed the generic kernel meta package
- no depmod failures this time - and rebooted again. This time,
2.6.24-21 booted correctly and all devices seem to work correctly now.
