About the suggested workarounds:

serialize_io=1 is on by default anyway, hence specifying this option does
nothing. (serialize_io=0 is too buggy hence not used by default.) Please
check if sbp2 is loaded in serialized mode even if you don't provide this
option explicitly:
# cat /sys/module/sbp2/parameters/serialize_io
This should be "Y" on kernel 2.6.27.

max_speed=1 slows SBP-2 transfers down from (in this particular case)
400 Mb/s base rate to 200 Mb/s base rate. This option may make
electrically unstable buses work somewhat more reliably but would
ultimately be unable to really fix an electrically unstable (noisy) bus.
The dmesg in the initial bug description does not show symptoms which
would clearly indicate a noisy bus (bu it cannot be ruled out entirely).

Did you use one of the other OSs, including older Ubuntu, successfully
on the very same PC with the very same disk?

Furthermore, this disk is based on the Prolific PL3507 chip which is
known to be sold with slightly buggy or extremely buggy firmwares.
Please check if you can update the firmware of this disk. The updater
of PL3507's FireWire firmware requires Windows and uses USB. See
http://ieee1394.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Firmware_Downloads#Prolific_bridges
