Since I upgraded the driver, I haven't yet had any crash yet. So either I was just extremely lucky, or it also fixed problem for me.
It took me quite a while to link the crashes to the vireless driver (I initially thought it was problem with compiz). I really think that if you can't provide the backports, then at least there should be some kind of notification for the first run, something like: "you seem to be running an Intel 4965 wireless card. There's a known bug that will make your system unstable.
