Actually that quote is backward as the one's before it read:
"If you are using the AC875, MC8755, MC8765, MC8775 issue AT commands or 
queries to /dev/ttyUSB2. AT commands can be used while a data connection is 
established on /dev/ttyUSB0. "

I have a feeling this is mis documented on the website fore the AC881.
And it should read:

"If you are using the AC881, MC8781, MC8780 issue AT commands or queries
to /dev/ttyUSB2. AT commands can be used while a data connection is
established on /dev/ttyUSB0"
