Gah! I followed Simon Lewis's intructions - it purged policykit AND network manager along with it, which means NO NETWORK i.e. NO network installs. I.e. NM is dead and I can't re=install it.
Having a bugger of a time getting a USB key to mount with a new NM package (xubuntu bug), and then I find the package is missing the MAKE compiler. Crikey! So now I'm kinda stuck...
