I have installed the new intel driver from here: https://launchpad.net/~thjaeger/+archive and the tearing bug is still there, by the way I have found a workaround to get a decent quality in movie playing, you just have to install driconf and enable the vsync option “always” This trick works for me and fixes the tearing issue under mplayer (but not compiz)
