Configuration is, as you've no doubt uncovered, accomplished via editing ~/.xmonad/xmonad.hs (as a starting point). To obtain an immediately useful environment, you may wish to install the libghc6-xmonad-contrib- dev package and to use the hints/guides for a particular desktop environment. The Xmonad web site contains guides for GNOME, KDE, and Xfce.
