I'm running into the same problem as well. This happens using both
ubuntu-8.10-beta-desktop-i386.iso and ubuntu-8.10-beta-desktop-amd64.iso
images. My system consists of:

Motherboard - ECS GeForce7050M-M (believe mine is v2.0)
Processor - AMD Athlon LE-1620
Memory - Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2x1GB matched set
Hard Drive - Samsung SpinPoint P120 SP2004C
DVD RW - Samsung WriteMaster SH-S203N

I have never had any problem running either 8.04 or 8.04.1 live cds.

For me, after the initial "(EE) No devices detected" message, there is
another popup window with two selections: "reconfigure graphics" or
"trouble shoot the error". Selecting "trouble shoot the error" presents
a new window with several logs to look through, but I honestly do not
know what I should be looking for. I also do not know how to capture
and save these log files since they are present during the livecd
session. If you think these log files are useful, and can give me some
ideas how to capture them, I'll be happy to provide them to you.
