I'm running into the same problem as well. This happens using both ubuntu-8.10-beta-desktop-i386.iso and ubuntu-8.10-beta-desktop-amd64.iso images. My system consists of:
Motherboard - ECS GeForce7050M-M (believe mine is v2.0) Processor - AMD Athlon LE-1620 Memory - Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2x1GB matched set Hard Drive - Samsung SpinPoint P120 SP2004C DVD RW - Samsung WriteMaster SH-S203N I have never had any problem running either 8.04 or 8.04.1 live cds. For me, after the initial "(EE) No devices detected" message, there is another popup window with two selections: "reconfigure graphics" or "trouble shoot the error". Selecting "trouble shoot the error" presents a new window with several logs to look through, but I honestly do not know what I should be looking for. I also do not know how to capture and save these log files since they are present during the livecd session.
