Seems to be a similar problem as bug #200338, but with different kernel 
versions:
Automatic kernel upgrade on kubuntu 8.04, i686, kde 3.5.10, dell dimension 
4300, dual-boot (XPpro).
lost all sound, Amarok reports 'xine unable to initialise audio driver'
Soundcard is installed and working (both in the previous kernel, now 
re-installed, an in Windows), recognised in 2.6.24-21:
