I found something interesting. Ubuntu 8.10 beta IS able to automount under the following condition.
1. Plug in a USB flash drive. Automount will fail. 2. Leave that drive plugged in. 3. Plug in a second USB flash drive. Automount will succeed! The first drive must remain plugged in. If you then attempt to remove the first device and re-insert while the second is mounted, it fails. I would try with 3 flash drives, but my laptop only has 2 USB ports. please Please PLEASE!
