Vaguely similar problem here: xsane got itself into a strange state: preview window was blank (not the usual image and buttons) and left coloured dots as mouse was moved across it. This was after it failed to talk with the printer (HP PSC 750 printer + scanner) because it was being printed to. Attempting to press the "acquire preview button" (by guessing where it was) caused xsane to hang and finally crash after trying to close it. Restarting xsane and the printer did not help. Restarting the computer fixed the problem.
