I think I've found the problem - gnome-sound-properties was displaying a
blank sound theme in the drop-down combobox.

The updated gnome-sound-properties in gnome-control-center
1:2.24.0.1-0ubuntu5 wasn't even remembering the sounds I set - on re-
opening, it said:

(gnome-sound-properties:8030): sound-properties-DEBUG: setting theme __custom
(gnome-sound-properties:8030): sound-properties-DEBUG: not found, falling back
to fdo
(gnome-sound-properties:8030): sound-properties-DEBUG: setting theme freedesktop

So I selected the Ubuntu sound them, selected a custom sound, and then
the sound theme changed to Custom. Now it both remembers the sound and
plays it correctly.

PS. Do I have to do anything re bugzilla.gnome.org?
