Ok; I tested a few days with the older drivers and they work properly. There was one issue where the middle of the screen within Opera did not update properly but we'll assume that to be a fluke... The odd thing is that I distinctly remember that when I ran Ubuntu 8.04 I updated to the beta drivers (177) directly from the nvidia site and they worked properly... Ah well.
