Why not just edit /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst to reflect the
proper drive mappings?

The patch that you want me to remove would keep some people from even
using dapper. The worst problem you are having is that you are going
from hda to sda, right? And this resolves itself by taking 3 minutes to
boot because of it, but can be resolved easily by editing a few files.
