I can confirm this. For me this happens when accessing mp3s shared on Windows machine over VFS.
- both Rhythmbox and Totem report "could not read from source" - eog does open single images from samba shares but doesn't enable "back" and "forward" buttons for the directory (this may be another issue however) - evince does happily read pdf's So may be this is really for music and video media only... P.S. Pretty annoying regression if you ask me since I keep all my media on a single machine at home which happens to run Windows.
