I tried a fresh install from the Intrepid i386 beta disk and updated
everything, and audio is still broken, but differently:

- it doesn't show the digitial microphone controls at all: volume
control preferences has 'digital input source' but no 'digital'
available, and the recording tab doesn't appear if you choose to see the
'HDA Intel (ALSA mixer)' controls (you have to choose one of the capture
inputs, and then you only get a master volume control that doesn't have
any effect)

- skype (audio out) still won't run using the standard default driver
settings

- sound recorder still works incorrectly and hangs if you choose ALSA as
the input

- and sound still crackles in wine.
