Public bug reported:
There seems to be no way at all to change the laptop screens brightness
while X is running on the screen. Both the function keys and the gnome
brightness applet fail to do their job. All worked perfectly pre-
intrepid. I have a feeling the regression in intrepid is down to the
latest auto-detection in Xorg.
A workaround I have found is if I switch away from X with ctrl+alt+F1
then I can change the brightness with the hotkeys and then return to X
with ctrl+alt+F7. Not the most efficient way but might give you a clue
about whats happening. It seems my LCD is not configured properly within
intrepid too as the file in /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/info shows the
monitor as UNKNOWN and also claims it's unknown to the bios.
Blacklisting the video module doesnt cure anything though.
If any more information is required just ask and I will try my best to
provide...
