Update to the problem. While trying to isolate what was going on in
/var/log/messages. The problem is related to sleep/restart. Here is the
output if I am connected and cycle the wifi switch.

I bring the device up with ifconfig wlan0 up:

The problem only happens if the switch is off and the computer is restarted or 
put to sleep with the switch off the whole time. Here is the log from a sleep
