Problem observed here. I tried to upgrade to Intrepid using `update-manager 
-d`, but encountered this error. Gnome is in a bad state now (I have to go to a 
virtual console and type `DISPLAY=0:0 gnome-panel&` to get gnome-panel to 
start.)
At the moment I am trying the method described by Charles Curley.
