suspend to ram now works OK on my dell D630. Resume from suspend still takes a bit of time (I'd say more than 30s), but I can make it resume almost instantly by switching to the graphic terminal manually (CTRL+ALT+F7). However, after a few seconds, the screen turns briefly black (and comes back to the gnome desktop. But this is a minor annoyance.
