As noted in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/243738,
this can be fixed with

apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-common

However, I think it's a but that a hardy->intrepid upgrade doesn't do
this automatically.  (So the user experience of the upgrade is just
"help!  Where'd my wireless go?")
