I own an ASUS A6VA too. On Edgy I had to do as Alexandre did as stated above to have the output work when plugging headphones, with the only exception that I just concatenated the command at the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. I can recall of a file named "sound", but it might source back from the Dapper days or even the Breezy ones.
