I'm also sure that this is a bug. My machine with the same hardware worked 
perfect for 2 years with all past Ubuntu versions. Only this last 2.6.27-6 
kernel can't use this hard disk.
I normally  use this hard disk as secondary SATA drive.  If I use only this 
hard disk as primary SATA drive the system still has the problem. It's not a 
problem to use one or two hard disk. 
I think this can help. If I change the jumper in the hard disk from 3GB/s to 
1,5GB/s the system runs perfectly. As I tell before the problem is also present 
in last Debian Lenny kernel.
