Try disabling acpi.

Remove the word 'quiet' from the kernel line and replace it with 'acpi=off'
while booting.
I am not a software engineer but my hands-on experience with kubuntu has taught
me this. In any case, there is no harm trying
my suggestion. Kubuntu 7.10 worked without any such modification on my machine
(Acer laptop aspire 5052), but when I installed 8.04 I had to modify the kernel
command line as above.
