I was using Gentoo, but I decided that compile everything is an ecological problem. On Gentoo, the sane avision backend works very well with my HP Scanjet 8250. There, when I issue scanimage or even scanimage -h I can hear the ADF initialization, I can scan large amounts of pages using the ADF etc. The only problem with Gentoo is the scanable are, solved with the force-a4 option.
But using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (and live beta CD) I cannot scan at all. Scan detection is OK, but xsane crashs and scanimage aborts with signal 15. I am using libsane-1.0.19-1ubuntu3. > uname -a Linux dedalu 2.6.24-21-generic #1 SMP Mon Aug 25 17:32:09 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux > dmesg ... I found a lot of similar bug reports... I hope I am reporting this in the right place.
