I can confirm that this problem exists for me using the Intrepid beta, with the following kernel: 2.6.27-6-generic
My laptop is a Toshiba Tecra M4. I think that part of the problem in this case is that my DMI table is incomplete, and doesn't contain accurate information, as shown by the attached dmidecode output.
