Richard: do you get kernel panics only during the boot (like me) or also when 
the system has booted properly. 
Actually you may be right regarding successful boot after being power-off for 
longer time: this may result in my impression that it did not panic 100% times. 

Otherwise, new kernel currently being built has some softirq/htimers fixes that 
may be related: 
  * hrtimer: migrate pending list on cpu offline
  * hrtimer: fix migration of CB_IRQSAFE_NO_SOFTIRQ hrtimers
  * hrtimer: mark migration state
  * hrtimer: prevent migration of per CPU hrtimers
