Lightning 0.9 with Hardy's Thunderbird doesn't work either, Intrepid will come with Lightning 0.8.
Another workaround is to use Mozilla's binaries (instead of Ubuntu packages). I wouldn't recommend this on any system that requires official support, but if your trust mozilla.org binaries and their upgrade/updates mechanisms, you can use ubuntuzilla, see http://ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/.
