All the workarounds mentioned in this thread (editing xorg.conf)
unfortunately did not fix my problem. This is really annoying. The
hardware is a desktop PC with P35 chipset and dual core CPU and a 32bit
OS.

Also the problem seems to come and go, sometimes the mouse works fine
for a few minutes and suddenly each mouse click acts as a double click.
I exchanged the mouse hardware too - to no avail.
