I experienced the same problem with a Nikon CoolPix L2. Setting the permissions in the udev configuration solved it. The id of the devices is as follows:
ID 04b0:0148 Nikon Corp. The camera worked fine on Dapper. I guess there's a particular reason why the default permissions were changed (or so I assume before further research) but it seems to cause some problems.
