It appears that invoke-rc.d at least partially works actually. That one was mentioned by someone else while discussing my hosts issue, so I'm not sure it it works for some things and not others or if that portion all works. I would need to check it further, as I just took their word on it for the initial report. Still no evidence of hosts autocomplete, nor do I know what else may be possible to still implement that hasn't been yet.
