This is not a bug people, it is just not configured by default.

To configure the GGZ network (the main GNOME games network) do this:
sudo aptitude install ggz-gtk-client

Then run the application and configure your profile and such properly (check 
all settings, configure them and apply them):
ggz-gtk

Now when you do the same thing again, the "GGZ Community (fast)" option
will appear in the list when you pick a network game in glChess.

To prevent further confusion and make it user friendlier the Ubuntu
developers might want to preconfigure this, and for example by default
make users have a guest account named "UbuntuUser01" or something.
