If you have the pavucontrol package installed, I suggest you run pavucontrol and see what output pulseaudio is using by default. If you could also give me the contents of your /proc/asound/cards that would also be much appreciated. I suspect your system has more than one sound device, and the sound card you want to use is not set as the default.
