I have this same problem on my ibm thinkpad t40 laptop. If the quiet option is removed from the boot splash you can see that it sops after the message "starting kernel event manager" comes up on the screen. The progress bar is about 1/6 complete, and after waiting for ~3 minutes it carries on booting.
