I finally discovered my problem of the interminable wild hard disk
activity. It wasn't MythTV. I had already uninstalled that.

I have a 250GB disk. Before installing Hardy Heron, I decided to
rationalize my disk space by reorganizing the partitions completely. I
used Gparted to do this. It involved moving my 2GB Linux swap partition.
Unfortunately, on moving the swap partition to another part of the disk,
Gparted did not update the UUID of the swap partition in /etc/fstab.
Consequently, ubuntu was constantly looking for the Linux swap partition
at its old UUID. Correcting the swap partition's UUID manually in
/etc/fstab cured the problem instantly and permanently.
