Thank you Daniel for your hint that digital audio passthrough is a
kernel issue and not an alsa issue. Did never suspect that before. Just
lack the energy, but will come back to the linux spdif issue on the
weekend.

I just updated to 2.6.27-4 and "m-a a-i" ist still the line 90 error.
BTW, that box is on a cheap amd64x2 4200+ with nforce 5? 6?.

However, I suspect some additional race in the 2.6.27-4 as several boots
failed - one time reiserfs could not be mounted (shortly after I heard
the crank of the analog audio being switched on, another boot just
hanged when trying to start the nvidia driver (which usually breaks in
intrepid with every update, so that I have to purge and reinstall the
package, and then restoring the xorg.conf's 1360x768 LCD-TV modeline...

(Just trying to work out the replacement box, which is (or will be) a
EE-65W-Phenom on AMD780G chipset (hdmi...). Also lots of intrepid issues
there - alsamixer doesn't look promising, plays some sound but far too
muted...)
