Thank you Daniel for your hint that digital audio passthrough is a kernel issue and not an alsa issue. Did never suspect that before. Just lack the energy, but will come back to the linux spdif issue on the weekend.
I just updated to 2.6.27-4 and "m-a a-i" ist still the line 90 error. BTW, that box is on a cheap amd64x2 4200+ with nforce 5? 6?. However, I suspect some additional race in the 2.6.27-4 as several boots failed - one time reiserfs could not be mounted (shortly after I heard the crank of the analog audio being switched on, another boot just hanged when trying to start the nvidia driver (which usually breaks in intrepid with every update, so that I have to purge and reinstall the package, and then restoring the xorg.conf's 1360x768 LCD-TV modeline... (Just trying to work out the replacement box, which is (or will be) a EE-65W-Phenom on AMD780G chipset (hdmi...).
