I now followed instructions in the ubuntu forums on how to set up pulseaudio and when using "Playback: HDA Intel - ALC883 Analog (Pulseaudio Mixer) and can set the volume but it's a bit strange, when changing it from 100% to around 20% nothing happens, the last 20% change the volume until its muted.
