Additional information: In the BIOS the ACPI Suspend Type was set as S1 & S3. ACPI APIC support is enabeled.
I changed the suspend type to S1, and no longer have the option to "Sleep", only "Hibernate". When I choose Hibernate, it actually shuts the machine completely down with no power to any devices. Restarting the computer resulted in the ubuntu splash screen hanging.
