Vino _does_ display an icon in the notification area when someone is
connected. The icon disappears when the client disconnects. You can
configure the appearance of the icon by going to System -> Preferences
-> Remote Desktop -> Advanced -> Notification Area, where you have 3
options "Always display an icon", "Only display an icon when there is
someone connected" and "Never display an icon".
