I agree, it is able to *read* passwords from keyring.

The problem is, looking at the passwords with
Application|Accessories|Passwords and Encryptions keys, I saw that I had
my WPA password twice, for the same ESSID. I deleted both of them,
hoping that the network-applet will write only one.

But no, it doesn't want to write. It appears in the Passwords and
Encryptions keys but without the icon in the front column. I don't know
the meaning of the first column, I guess an icon appears when the
password is saved "forever", and it is not there when the password is
saved only for the current session.

So, Thomas, delete Gajim password from keyring, logout and login, enter
password, logout and login, see if you need to enter the password
again... Maybe you can have a look at the icon state.
