lichtgestalt, can you attach the X log with the errors? It's probably the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old or /var/log/Xorg.0.log as you probably know. I had something similar break, I removed xorg-driver-fglrx, and then I did a reinstall xserver-xorg-core to be sure my libdri.so was alright. Then it worked.
I think you should be able to remove xorg-driver-fglrx safely?
