I have had a similar experience with an Inspiron 1100 laptop, A32 BIOS,
using Ubuntu. Fn-F8 under Gutsy (just rechecked, running as live CD)
alternates between LCD and CRT just fine (though never both and both is
convenient). For Hardy 8.04.1, there are differences in kernels
2.6.22-14-generic and 2.6.24-19-generic. For example, in 2.6.22-14
Fn-F8 switches between screens but garbles the output and in 2.6.24-19,
Fn-F8 garbles the LCD output (some trash at the top but mostly readable
though displaced downward) only if no CRT is connected and does nothing
more than make the CRT flicker if the CRT is connected.

However, I blundered into i810switch and i810rotate and found that they
do provide the desired results for both kernels. Especially with
2.6.22-14, using Fn-F8 before i810switch can cause difficulty in getting
the LCD display lit. With these kernels, I can find no use for Fn-F8.

I believe this workaround also applies to bug #206826.
