This is still an issue in Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha-5 (last updated Sept 19 2008), kernel version 2.6.27-3-generic. This issue affects Pidgin 2.4.1 and 2.5.0 and on multiple machines. I have attached a short screen capture as demonstration of the bug. Andreas, please try testing this further to see if it happens to you sometimes.
