I am now using intrepid.
Using for example a test preferences file like this:
Package: alien
Pin: release v=8.10
Pin-Priority: -1

the command "sudo aptitude install alien" worked without crashing. I
tried different combination of preferences and packages. It never
crashed. When using a priority of zero (but not for less than zero) a
warning is issued.

The only remaining complaint is that according to the apt_preferences
manpage,a negative priority "prevents the version from being installed"
while, actually, it still gets installed. But as I understand it, it is
a bug from libapt and not aptitude ...
