I am getting the same error but am using vpnc instead of pptp. I have manually setup /etc/vpnc/default.conf so that "sudo vpnc" connects to the VPN okay. The problem occurs when trying to do the same thing through the NetworkManager - I selected "VPN Connections=>Configure VPN" and added the same information I used in /etc/vpnc/default.conf. But when I try to connect to the VPN I get the same error message reported above.
