I have been investigating the issue with upstream and it seems it is
extremely simple. There is a faulty build switch in the code that builds
in code that should not be there for Xorg 1.4 and up. It worked
correctly for a particular version in between now and the first report
and thus my memory of it being ok. The next development release should
come with the corrected switch and fix the crashes. Current source can
easily be built to not crash too with some manual patching. You can find
