I was not using a LCD but 2 different CRTs. Like I said the bug is gone :-) but in my humble opinion the source of the problem should be tracked down (i.e. why firefox was not rebooting properly) and be corrected - I believe that an easy working browser is crucial for an OS like Ubuntu
