Go into the menu of mc: Options, Configuration and check the option "use internal edit" to make mcedit the default editor again. Perhaps activate "use internal view" too. On my system with Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and mc 1:4.6.1-8ubuntu1 mcedit was the default editor after installation. Let us know if the problem is solved for you.
